The towering mountains of the Drakensberg, the highest of which peaks at 3,475 metres, have attracted nature lovers for centuries now. Their jagged peaks offer a dramatic backdrop to the hiking trails, historic sites, and towns that dot the region.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find the region has plentiful opportunities for hiking, horse riding, offroading, and fishing – with more sedate activities like golf and lawn bowls also available.
A number of Boer War historic sites are also in the region, and for military history enthusiasts, there are more than a dozen historic sites to be explored and experienced firsthand.

The true draw of the region are its mountains, and many come here simply to soak in the mountain air and enjoy being away from it all.
